Centering Prayer

Savio Rodrigues SJ

Sit quietly, comfortable and relaxed. Rest with your longing and desire for God. Use no words. Open your heart to the Spirit dwelling within you.

Move to the centre within your deepest self. Imagine your-self slowly descending in an elevator or walking down a flight of stairs or descending from a mountain or going down into the water, as in a deep pool — all these leading you into the deepest recesses of your inner-self.

In this stillness, become aware of God’s presence. Absorb God’s love peacefully.

In centering prayer we go beyond thought and image. We go beyond sentences and the rational mind, to the centre, where God is at His wonderful work.

End your prayer with a prayer of gratitude, or with a vocal prayer.
